【Report】Matsuda tourism festival tour

On August 23, the 45th Matsuda Tourism Festival and Ashigara Fireworks were held. To coincide with this event, the Matsuda Town International Exchange Volunteer Association organized a special cultural exchange tour.

During the day, participants gathered at Matsuda’s traditional tea house Saika-en to experience Japanese culture in a cool and relaxing atmosphere. Activities included yukata dressing, tea ceremony, bon-odori dance practice, making matcha and strawberry shaved ice, and a cultural exchange session. In the evening, everyone moved to the festival grounds to enjoy food stalls, bon-odori dancing, and finally the spectacular fireworks display.

8月23日に第45回まつだ観光まつりと足柄花火大会が開催されました。 松田町国際交流ボランティアの会では、お祭りに合わせて国際交流ツアーを実施しました。 日中は松田町のお茶室「Saika-en」で、涼しい室内で日本文化体験を行うことができました。日本文化体験は、浴衣体験、茶道体験、盆踊り練習会、宇治抹茶といちごかき氷作り、交流会を行いました。夕方からはお祭り会場へ移動し、屋台の食事や盆踊りを楽しみ、最後に花火大会を観賞しました。

Yukata Experience

Thanks to the generous support of the Tea Ceremony Association, participants not only had their yukata dressed but were also treated to surprise hairstyling and hair accessories, which delighted everyone. After dressing, a professional photographer held a photoshoot in the tea house garden.

Tea Ceremony

Guided by the Omotesenke school, participants observed a formal tea ritual and learned the meaning of ichigo-ichie (“once-in-a-lifetime encounter”). Each person had the chance to prepare tea themselves, carefully drawing hot water from the kettle. Though nervous at first, many were moved by the taste of the tea they had prepared. Traditional Japanese sweets were also introduced, and one participant commented, “The harmony of the sweet confectionery and the bitterness of the matcha is wonderful.”

【浴衣体験】

茶道協議会様のご厚意により、浴衣の着付けだけでなく、髪飾りや髪のセットもサプライズで提供され、参加者に大変喜ばれました。着付け後はお茶室のお庭で、プロのカメラマンによる撮影会も行われました。

【茶道体験】

表千家のお点前を拝見し、「一期一会」の意味を学びました。参加者一人ひとりが窯からお湯を取り、お茶を点てる貴重な体験をし、緊張しながらも自分で点てたお茶の味に感動していました。美しい和菓子も紹介され、「甘いお菓子と抹茶の苦みの調和が素晴らしい」と感想を述べる方もいました。

Matcha & Strawberry Shaved Ice

Participants enjoyed making their own shaved ice creations. Among international guests, the most popular was uji-matcha shaved ice topped with sweet red beans (azuki) and shiratama rice dumplings.

Cultural Exchange Session

This year’s participants came from the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan. During the exchange, the theme was “What is your favorite dish from your home country?” Beyond well-known foods such as Tom Yum soup and Nasi Goreng, participants introduced many other delicious local specialties, sparking great curiosity and appetite.

【宇治抹茶・いちごかき氷作り】

参加者それぞれがお好みのかき氷を作りました。外国人には、抹茶、あずき、白玉を使った宇治抹茶かき氷が人気でした。

【交流会】
今回の参加者は、フィリピン、インドネシア、タイ、マレーシア出身の方々と日本人です。交流会では、「その国の方に聞いてみよう！お国の料理で一番好きなもの」というテーマでお話を伺いました。書籍やネットで紹介される日本人にも馴染みのあるトムヤンクンスープやナシゴレン以外にも美味しい料理がたくさんあることを知り、食べてみたくなりました。

At the Festival Grounds

When the time came for the real bon-odori, participants confidently showcased the dances they had practiced earlier. Some foreign participants were even approached by local festival-goers asking, “Can you teach me how to dance?”—a wonderful sign of how naturally cultural exchange was taking place.

Fireworks Finale

By the end of the day, participants who had met for the first time in the morning had already become friends. Sharing conversations and gratitude under the dazzling fireworks, everyone created lasting summer memories together.

【お祭り会場で】
練習の成果を披露する本番の盆踊り。ツアー参加者の外国人が、知らない日本人に「踊り方を教えてもらえますか」と声をかけられたのは驚きでした。とても上手に踊っていたのだと思います。

【花火大会】
今日、初対面だった参加者同士が一日を共にし、友達になり、夏の思い出を作ることができました。互いに感謝し合いながら、また語り合いながら見る花火大会は、感動的なひとときでした。
